Future Proofing Tech Skills and Safety
An ‘Education Week’ article in 2020 focused on ‘Five Things Big Business Wanted Students to Learn for the Future of Work’. Learning new technologies was one of the five.
“The thoughtful use of technology in context will provide the students with exposure to the ways of thinking and working which reflect the real world of college and career.” (Microsoft - Michele Freed).
Along with 1:1 iPads, the School is extremely well resourced with information and communication technology (ICT) including:
· Programmable Bee Bots, Oz Bots, Spheros, Lego, and Edison robots.
· Coding Apps and activities.
· Electronic programming games.
· Google Expedition Virtual Reality.
· Digital microscopes.
· Green Screen Studio.
Most importantly, we have the unique provision of a Director of Technology who is not only a technology wiz, but also a fully trained classroom teacher with years of teaching experience. He carefully facilitates a rich ICT program where technology is integrated into other learning, making it more relevant, meaningful, and powerful.
Wherever possible, boys need learning to be relevant and connected. They also need plenty of opportunities for hands-on exploration and tinkering.
“The latest and most innovative technology should be used to inspire students with hands-on activities.” (Verizon - Justina Nixon-Saintil).
Digital literacy education and the use of technology to enhance learning are critical. However, they must be supported by protective measures, including safe use education and protective measures.
At Mosman Prep, along with close teacher supervision and support, we have the following measures in place:
1. Student Technology Agreements.
2. Bullying and Cybersafety Policy.
3. Empowering parent events and student education programs.
3. Cyberhound Web Filtering system, ensuring our web browsing is age appropriate, strictly filtered, and secure.
4. All iPads and internet enabled devices are monitored with live reporting using our Cyberhound system, linking users with their device's unique IP and Mac address.
5. Layer 2 Cisco Firewall which heavily guards our school network from unknown inbound and outbound data (malicious attacks), and devices.
6. iPads managed by our JAMF Mobile Device Management system, allowing us to limit the iPad to only Mosman Prep supported apps and settings.
7. Google Workspace Apps such as Gmail, Google Docs, Classroom etc, are set up for students where they can only collaborate with users from within Mosman Prep School.
We are empowering our boys to thrive safely in the area of technology, both now and into the future.
