Celebrating Learning and Making it ‘My Own’
“Education is not the learning of facts, but training the mind to think.” (- Albert Einstein)
Our Learning Celebration next Thursday 16 June promises to be a very special community event, and one which will further develop our boys to take responsibility and ownership for their learning journey.
It is interesting to reflect on the difference between the way we might prepare and practice for a performance and our enthusiasm for classroom routine. For a big music concert, a play, or sporting game, we might strive to present our very best self, but perhaps not always engage with such vigour in academic learning.
When they know that the work they are doing will culminate in a final display in front of their community, the boys are more invested and engaged in the learning process. They are more willing to refine their work, meet deadlines, and take responsibility for their learning when they have a sense that others care about their work - when there is an audience!
“Learning Celebrations involving an authentic audience ignite the capacity of students to take responsibility for their own learning and build independence, critical thinking skills, and perseverance.” (Ron Berger 2014)
Through the process of explaining and articulating their learning, students can further clarify their knowledge and understanding and so consolidate their learning. In addition, the process of presenting helps to develop important communication skills and confidence.
With only a week to go, if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to invite relatives and friends to our ‘Learning Celebration’. Not only will they enjoy the Mosman Prep community, but they will be contributing greatly to your son's development as an independent learner for life.
