Refurbishment and Refreshment
On my arrival at Mosman Prep four and a half years ago, I read the “100 Years of Mosman Prep” celebration book, revelling in the School’s rich history since 1904.
Throughout those years, the world has moved from the industrial era of mechanisation to mass production, assembly lines and electrical energy on to automation, computers and electronics, cyber physical systems, internet, and networks.
Mosman Prep has remained at the forefront of transformational educational change, benefiting our boys, their families, the School, and through them, society.
The OECD ‘Future of Education and Skills 2030 project’ posed the questions:
‘How can we prepare students for jobs that have not yet been created, to tackle societal challenges that we cannot yet imagine, and to use technologies that have not yet been invented?’
‘What kinds of competencies (knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values) do today’s students need to thrive in and shape the future for better lives and for individual and societal well-being?’
‘How do we design learning environments that can nurture such competencies?’
Learning at Mosman Prep follows six guiding principles to establish a rigorous framework for all our teaching and learning:
• promoting wellbeing
• supporting evidence-based practice
• using data and assessments to inform
• maintaining explicit teaching
• encouraging integration, investigation, and
• collaboration
We ensure students are developing the learner attributes of being:
prepared, innovative, curious, and collaborative.
An important component of our Strategic Plan is to ensure we … ‘Enhance learning spaces and facilities so that they support our Learning Model, and ensure a safe, innovative, and nurturing environment.’
A team of Mosman Prep teachers has visited targeted schools to examine their learning space design and furniture, and we have met with several companies to discuss furniture and furnishings. I am excited to announce that over the holiday break the first of our new furniture will arrive.
What is most powerful and exciting about this phase of school improvement, is that our co-created Strategic Plan and Learning Model has guided the process, ensuring the improvements are not only aesthetically appealing, but more importantly educationally purposeful and functional.
